“For one human being to love another: that is perhaps the most difficult of all our tasks, the ultimate, the last test and proof, the work for which all other work is but preparation.” —Rainer Maria Rilke
Romantic love is a deep longing and central preoccupation for almost every man and woman. The joy and suffering it brings infuse every corner of life and culture. People are saved by it, and die for it, and learn from it. We fall in and out of love, over and over again, and yet it remains a mystery.
The ancient Greeks personified Love as the beautiful goddess Aphrodite, who arose from sea foam fresh as spring, and her tempestuous son Eros, commonly known today as Cupid. These deities are present in contemporary Western culture, “aphrodisiac” for example, and yet their deeper significance is largely forgotten. What can they tell us today?
Join Dr. Catherine Svehla for an exploration of Aphrodite and Eros, as they appear in Greek mythology and the work of archetypal psychologist, James Hillman. Come reflect on the mysteries of love through the eyes of these gods, and their presence in your life.
